Principal's Welcome
Principal's Welcome
Welcome!
Northbrook Junior High School serves approximately 620 students in grades 6-8. It is our goal to partner with parents to create a learning environment that is engaging, challenging, and supportive.
About Northbrook Junior High
Our students consistently score well above average on local and state assessments. In recent years, NBJH has received the Academic Achievement Award from the State of Illinois. NBJH continues to refine the curriculum in all content areas as well as implement instructional strategies that reflect best practices. Our goal is to provide collaborative, engaging and inclusive classrooms where all students find success as learners.
Block Schedule
NBJH has a ten-period schedule -- nine 40-minute periods and one 30-minute X-Block. Sixth- through eighth-graders complete a core curriculum in Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and World Language (Spanish or French). LA and Math are paired together in a 3-period block with classes alternating between 40 and 80 minutes each day. Resource support periods are available for students as needed. Students are also provided with opportunities to explore elective interests in Art, Drama, Music, Woodworking, STEM, and Literacy. Students enroll in physical education classes each year, with one quarter each year devoted to health and wellness.
Students have a 30-minute X-Block period daily. During X-Block, students develop study skills, complete homework, and develop a sense of community. This block of time is used to provide academic intervention support in math and literacy three days per week and also serves as a time for weekly social-emotional literacy activities that focus on a wide range of middle school topics.
Fine Arts and Activities
We offer a music program that includes band, orchestra, and choir. Students in band and orchestra attend weekly lessons with one of the music directors, as well as morning rehearsals two to three times a week. Our school’s performance groups are consistently recognized locally, regionally, and statewide with superior ratings. Thanks to our dedicated staff and supportive PTO, NBJH students can also participate on athletic teams and in a variety of extra-curricular clubs and activities throughout the year. NBJH is a member of the Central Suburban Middle School Athletic Conference.
Highly Qualified Staff
Our teachers are highly qualified professionals committed to excellence in education. They will build on your children’s current skills and help them develop the academic, social, and emotional skills they need to be successful in school and in life. They exemplify the District 28 motto of “Teaching, Learning, Caring.”
Parental Support
We are also fortunate to work in collaboration with parents who offer tremendous support to the learning environment. Our school benefits from an active PTO that funds teacher grants, sponsors class field trips, chaperones social events, and coordinates a career day every other year.
We are very proud of the accomplishments of our students and school. We encourage you to visit the school to see for yourself why our teachers, parents, and students make Northbrook Junior High School a great place to learn and grow.
